Chapter 6

Abby paused outside Jeremy’s office door, staring at his name etched on the bronze nameplate. The dread weighing her down at the thought of the coming conversation only made her third-guess her decision to accept Shaun’s dinner invitation. After a stern internal lecture over how ridiculous she was being, she rapped her knuckles against the solid wood.

Jeremy opened the door immediately. It caught her off guard. “Hi.”

He stepped back, motioning her inside. “Hey. What brings you by today?”

She shot him a smile, flashing more teeth than usual. She shouldn’t be this nervous. Honestly. He was her friend. She wasn’t accountable to him for whom she dated. They were doing better since he’d come back from spending the day with Shaun and the youths. He acted excited again about the center and how many more kids and parents they could reach for Jesus once it was built. The foundation had been poured and things were moving right along.

Here goes nothing. “I, um, I wanted to let you know things are going well. I know you can see the construction progress out your office window. The bank approved all the changes to the kitchen area. Marty has given the general contractor the new plans, and he’s changing the materials order now, so it will be as if that was the original design when they start on the interior.”

“That’s great. And, yeah, it’s hard to ignore the construction with the cement trucks and all the hammering.”

She glanced toward his picture window in a panic. “Oh, no. It isn’t affecting services, is it?”

He shook his head. “No, everyone’s excited that construction is underway.”

“Good. That’s great.”

He moved back to one of the chairs facing his desk and waited until she sat down before going around and taking his own seat. “Why do I feel like you aren’t here to update me on the progress of the construction?”

Her head shot up, and her gaze tangled with his. “Well. Um. That is—because that isn’t what I wanted to talk to you about.”

He eased back in his chair, watching her, searching her face. “Did something happen with Shaun?”

“No! I mean, not anything bad.” She let out a huff of breath, tired of the walk down Eggshell Lane. “Shaun asked me out to dinner.”

“You and Gina have been going to dinner with him for a while now. Why are you telling me about this meeting?” His eyes widened. “Oh. That kind of dinner.”

“The YMCA is honoring him and the Kids for Sports foundation next week. He asked me to go as his date.” Then for no reason she could understand, she kept talking, telling him way more than he needed to know. “He said the press only shows him with women whose appeal is limited to their looks.”

He was quiet for a few moments, and she resisted squirming in her chair, looking at anything but him. “He said it would be nice to have dinner with someone interested in more than who was on the cover of the latest fashion magazine.
